YGF: Thanks so much for taking the time to sit down with yum Gluten Free community! Let’s kick off by sharing how and when We Love Cake business began.
We Love Cake is owned by parent company, Bells of Lazonby. Bells of Lazonby Family Bakery started in a small village in England called Lazonby in 1946 when our founder returned from World War 2. It began as a small bakery shop with a van delivering fresh breads and cakes to the local surrounding villages. Later in the 1960’s the business expanded into larger premises alongside the railway in Lazonby. Here it remains, albeit in a very expanded and developed format, to this day.
YGF: Wow, what a start! So how did you go from 100% gluten to 100% gluten free??
The inspiration came from our second-generation family business owner and director. Back in 2002 he attempted to live 100% gluten free for a week. By Tuesday, his wife said can you either give up on this exercise or build a bakery to make products that actually taste good – because you are miserable! On Wednesday the ball began rolling of how we could build a free from bakery. This was the birth of We Love Cake! We pioneered the industry in the UK and achieved the Queen’s Award of innovation for our work in the sector. We continue to be at the forefront of our field.
YGF: Baking continues to reign in the family, I love it! We are so grateful for delicious gluten free products. How did you come up with the name?
The name We Love Cake was conjured up internally. A staff poll was conducted on what the new brand should be called and we went right back to our roots of why we wanted to produce this range for those with coeliac disease and allergen free market in the first place. Our aim was for allergy sufferers to be able to either return, or for the first time – love cake – as much as we had come to. Therefore, our name in its very essence represents who we are as bakers and lovers of what we produce.
YGF: And we certainly LOVE CAKE!: How do you take care to ensure your products are truly gluten free and free from cross contamination?
We place the upmost importance in ensuring our products are gluten free by producing our range in a completely dedicated gluten, wheat and milk free bakery. We also test rigorously and frequently to the lowest gluten level detections possible.
YGF: We are so grateful for your extreme care and caution. Is there anything else that sets you apart from the rest?
Our point of difference would be our quality. We are at the forefront of the gluten free industry and quite literally search the world for the finest gluten free flours. We trial products over and over again until we and our “We Love Cakers” sampling team are 100% happy with them.
YGF: Well we are certainly happy with your delicious products! Will you tell us a bit about your product line?
Our product lines in Australia includes Double Chocolate Brownies and Vegan Fruitcake Slices.
Creating soft and chewy Double Chocolate Brownies are delicious ingredients, including 30% chocolate (at minimum 53% cocoa solids), ground almonds and rice flour.
You won’t be surprised at the homemade taste of our Vegan Fruitcake Slice with ingredients like sultanas (25%), raisins (9%), cherries (7%), chopped dates (3%), brown sugar, ground almonds, rice flour, ground flaxseed, golden syrup and mixed spices – cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger, coriander, aniseed and dill.
We avoid 12 of the 14 notifiable allergens across our dedicated free from bakery including gluten, wheat and milk. The Fruit Cake Slices are also made without egg and are suitable for vegans.
YGF: We absolutely love that your products can be enjoyed by so many! What’s the best part about your business?
The best part of our business is the people that make our products. We have many longstanding employees working at Bells of Lazonby and they pour their heart and soul into the products they make. We believe that is what makes our products so special. Our people have both a passion for baking and a strong awareness of what it means to make products for those with coeliac disease or other food allergies. Being the first in the UK to build a dedicated gluten, wheat and milk free bakery of its kind, we have pioneered and set the bar of excellence in both quality and integrity in our field.
YGF: I love that your employees pour their passion into your products. Is there anything exciting in the pipeline you’d like to share?
We plan to expand into many other types of products including an exciting range of cake slices and sweet pastry tarts. As a company we are also launching a new brand into the Australian market in October – so watch this space. We plan on continuing to pioneer in this industry!
YGF: Woohoo! This is so exciting – thank you so much for taking the time with us today! Lastly, please share where we can find your products and how our readers stay in touch.
